Is it Time to Replace your Toothbrush or Brush Head?

The idea of replacing your toothbrush or brush heads applies to the similar idea of changing oil in your car: it’s recommended for every 3000 miles, but doesn’t typically need oil change until around 6000 miles. Therefore, oil changes mainly depend on the driver and not the mileage. Same idea goes for replacing your toothbrush.

The American Dental Association (ADA) and Winter Garden dentist have recommended toothbrush replacement approximately every three to four months or sooner if the bristles fray. Some toothbrushes include color-changing bristles that turn a different shade to indicate to the user of worn out bristles.

The consequences that come from having frayed toothbrush bristles are more than just aesthetics. Worn down bristles lose their effectiveness to scrape off plaque and calculus from the teeth and gum line easily and ultimately lose the ability to effectively clean your teeth.

On the other hand, if it has been over five months and you do not see any fraying in your bristles, you may not be brushing your teeth long enough, which dentists recommend two minutes for thoroughly cleaning your teeth and strengthening enamel. Parents should check children’s toothbrushes regularly, given that their oral practices tend to be faulty and they may need their brushes changed more frequently.

Hopefully you’ll keep this article in mind next time you look down at your toothbrush and see the bristles look a little furrowed. We urge you to add buying a new toothbrush or visiting your local dentist on your to do list. Your teeth and gums will thank you.
