Dental Tips For Kids

Proper Children’s Dental Care

You may think that starting your child’s dental care regimen will be a complicated task, but fear not; Winter Garden Smiles Family & Pediatric Dentistry makes your job easier! Instilling healthy oral habits early on in their childhood is crucial to maintaining your child’s pearly whites. If you’re not sure how to go about getting your child into the right dental care routine, this article will help you. To begin your child’s dental care routine, you should start by taking your child to a pediatric dentist. If you live in the Orlando area, Winter Garden Smiles Family & Pediatric Dentistry is a great place to start, we provide your children with the necessary tools to maintain a healthy mouth. Below are a few tips and tricks to start your child out right in the dental department. When to take a child to the dentist:

  • According to the American Pediatric Dentistry Association:
  •  When the child’s first tooth grows in
  •  By the time the child is 1 year old
  •  Have a check-up every 6 months after their initial visit, or when your pediatric dentist recommends you to return (this depends on the oral health of the child)

Tips for a child’s healthy mouth:

  • Brush twice a day
  • Brush for 2 minutes
  • Use pea-sized amounts of toothpaste from age 2 – 6
  • Have them begin using mouth wash at the age of 6
  • Stop the use of bottles at age 1
  • This helps prevent dental problems such as cavities
  • Limit juice and sugary drink intake to 4-6 oz. a day
  • Put water in sippy cups

Winter Garden Smiles is an Orlando family and pediatric dental practice that uses these tips while practicing healthy dental care on our younger customers. Along with these tips, we use (and recommend using) books with characters like Dora the Explorer and Elmo as brushing guides to get children interested in dental care. There are also applications that can be downloaded – like Brush with Jackson, and Talking Ginger – that have helpful attributes, like a 2 minute timer and a fun animal avatar that goes through the motions of correctly brushing their teeth, to make it easier to get your child started with his/her dental care routine. Using books and apps with characters that interest children can make tooth-brushing time fun, for your child and you! So be sure to schedule a pediatric dentist appointment for your child no later than their first birthday to ensure a healthy mouth. Happy brushing!
